Five Questions Before You Spend

Ask yourself these questions and you will save money. Life is for living and we are only here once but we also need to make sure that there is balance in our spending and that we are not spending on a whim.

1. Can I afford it?

If you’re planning to borrow from your future self or swipe your credit card like it’s a magic wand, maybe pump the brakes. Of course, emergencies happen, but if you’re debating between a coffee or a car loan… well, let’s chat priorities.

2. Can I pay the actual cost of it?

Spoiler alert: the price tag isn’t the only thing you’re paying for. Electrical gadgets eat electricity, pets eat your soul (I mean, food), and cars need fuel and constant love. Do your homework and make sure you’re cool with the full price of ownership, including all those sneaky costs.

3. Will it add value to my life?

Does it bring you happiness or solve a problem? If it’s just going to sit there collecting dust, maybe let it go. For instance, a car may be a necessity, but does your daily commute really require a Ferrari? (Unless you’re in the mood to blow up your savings for bragging rights.) Sometimes reliable and affordable does the job just fine.

4. Is this the best use of my money?

If not, redirect those funds somewhere smarter! Maybe pay off some debt, stuff it into a savings account, or buy something that actually brings lasting joy. Think of your money as your superhero—make it work for you, not the other way around.

5. Can it wait?

Is it really that urgent, or can it chill until tomorrow, next week, or even next year? The longer you wait, the more likely you’ll realise you don’t even want it anymore. And that’s how you win the shopping game!
