Back To Work Supports - Medical Card Issues

These are the main points to bear in mind:

• Medical cards may be retained for 3 years following commencement of employment for those who were in receipt of a Jobseekers payment

• Must have been in receipt of certain social welfare payments for 12 months or more Examples include JB/JA/OPFP/IB/IP/DA/BP, Employment or Training scheme

• The 3-year time limit begins on the date full time employment starts

• If part time work, 3-year limit begins when income exceeds medical card guidelines

• The medical card for the full family is retained

• Retention applies regardless of income from employment

• If the person had no medical card previously but had entitlement, then application of a medical card should be granted for the remainder of the 3-year period
